History of Egypt

Egypt known in Arabic as Misr which means the "civilization" or "metropolis" has endured a unified state for more than 5000 years. The traceable history of Egypt starts from 6000 B.C. when the pharaohs started organized agriculture along the banks of the River Nile. The remaining Pharaonic monuments, as the great pyramids of Giza and the great temples spread through the country testifies the religious power and wealth of the Pharoanic dynasties.

In 525 B.C. the last Pharaoh was dethroned by the Persians and from that date onwards Egypt experienced successive invasions. In 322 BC Alexander the Great started the Ptolemeic rule in Egypt. After a brief Persian re-conquest Egypt was invaded by the Arabs in 642 A.C. Since then Egypt became an Arab, Islamic country. Still a Coptic Christian minority remains today which constitute around 8% of Egyptian population.

For the next 1300 year Egypt was ruled by successive Arab, Mamluk and Ottoman caliphs and sultans. In 1805 Mohamed Ali the great "founder of modern Egypt", founded the dynasty that ruled Egypt till his great-great grand son Farouk I was dethroned by the 1952 revolution. In 1882 Egypt became under British mandate.

Although the UK declared Egypt independent in 1922 but the British power remained till the free officer's revolution in 1952. Egypt was declared a republic in 1953. during the 60's and 70's Egypt went into two wars with Israel and Egyptian policy has shifted from confrontation during Nasser era to peaceful accommodation through negotiation during Sadat's era especially after the Camp David peace treaty.

On October 6, 1981, President Sadat was assassinated by Islamic extremists. Hosni Mubarak, Vice President since 1975 and air force commander during the October 1973 war, was elected President later that month. He was subsequently confirmed by popular referendum for three more 6-year terms, most recently in September 1999. Mubarak has maintained Egypt's commitment to the Camp David peace process, while at the same time re-establishing Egypt's position as an Arab leader. Egypt was readmitted to the Arab League in 1989. Egypt also has played a moderating role in such international forums as the UN and the Nonaligned Movement.

That may look strange, but I even now am hard to believe that Egypt is the real geographical location - it looks like a dreamland to me- I visualize the Egypt as a homeland of fairy giants and thus am reading your blog as the sacred scriptures - thank you for the making the mysteries the reality.
